Neptune Unveils a Big 2010 / 2011 Season - Including Unique Shakespeare ‘Hat Trick’

Halifax, March 25, 2010 – Artistic Director George Pothitos today announced Neptune’s 2010 / 2011 playbill in Fountain Hall and it is a big one, It includes a bold season of dramas, comedies and musicals, including the season finale West Side Story and The Wizard of Oz at Christmas time.

“I have selected an ambitious playbill that takes a modern look at classic theatre.  We are performing what we have coined our Shakespeare ‘hat trick’, which features the dramatic Romeo and Juliet, the musical, West Side Story and the hilarious MacHomer,” says Pothitos.  “This is our year of passion - you’ll laugh, you’ll cry and this season, we hope you will fall in love again at Neptune Theatre.”

The season opens in Fountain Hall on September 14th with Romeo and Juliet, a tragic romance starring Shakespeare’s most famous lovers.  It is followed by Morris Panych’s 7 Stories, the touchingly funny, surrealist play about what happens when you take your life into your own hands.

At Christmas time, Neptune will once again deliver a spectacular Christmas production when the beloved family musical, The Wizard of Oz takes the stage.   A traditional post- Christmas comedy is also in store with Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit. Blithe Spirit is the comic story of a widower who is haunted by his vengeful first wife.  The season continues with The Beauty Queen of Leenane; a brilliant drama from award-winning Irish playwright Martin McDonagh

And to end the season, Neptune presents one of theatre’s most celebrated musicals and a bookend to the season opener, Romeo & JulietWest Side Story is the modern day version  of this love story, packed with unforgettable songs and exhilarating dance scenes.

Pothitos also announced an exciting trio of plays for its 2010 / 2011 Studio Series, most notably Rick Miller’s MacHomer.  This one-man vocal has been performed to audiences worldwide and features impressions of over 50 voices from TV’s “The Simpsons” in a hilarious performance of Shakespeare’s MacBeth!

Don Hannah’s Fathers and Sons explores the funny and touching relationship between two men as they develop their relationship from birth to death. Rounding out the series is the comic journey of two men on their last fishing trip - Michael Melski The Fly Fisher’s Companion is a hilarious catch!
